Dell Loy and Julie Hansen Scholars

at Salt Lake Community College

At a Glance:

The Dell Loy and Julie Hansen Scholars program at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) provides scholarships for students pursuing higher education based on need, rather than academic merit. This program is designed to support the local community by offering access to education for students who might not otherwise afford it.

Why:

Education has the power to transform lives—but for many students, financial limitations create barriers that feel impossible to overcome. At Salt Lake Community College, 47% of students are first-generation college attendees, and 73% are employed while attending classes, highlighting the need for support beyond just tuition. Dell Loy and Julie Hansen believe that everyone deserves a chance to succeed, regardless of their academic background or economic circumstances.

That’s why they created the Hansen Scholars Program at Salt Lake Community College—to open doors for students who are often overlooked by traditional scholarship models. By focusing on need rather than merit, this program empowers first-generation college students, working adults, and others striving to build a better future through education. It’s about more than covering tuition—it’s about investing in human potential and strengthening our local communities one student at a time.
